Ceramic Courses

The Ceramic Studio houses a work space area with purpose built benches, a wet room, a glaze room, a kiln room, a kitchenette, an art library and an extra multi-function space.

The Ceramic Studio operates 6 week ceramic courses throughout the year – morning or afternoon sessions on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each class is 2 hours (10am – 12pm, 1pm – 3pm).

The cost of the Ceramic course is $100 (clay and firing not included). Insurance requires all students to be a current member of the Blue Knob Hall ($25 New Members, $10 Renewing Members).

Students have the opportunity to develop their professional art practice through learning techniques including pinch pot, coil, slab, hand building, the potter’s wheel and surface decorations. Advanced students are welcome to explore further during the 6 week course.

Generous donations in 2023 saw the installation of an air conditioner and extraction fan in the Ceramic Studio.

Blue Knob Ceramics Founder Heather Kimber

Heather Kimber (Associate Diploma in Design majoring in Ceramics) has a long history of working in the arts and worked and volunteered many hours to help the Studio come into being.

Along with the donation of Heather’s initial studio equipment and gas kiln which, we also received a donation of another entire studio of equipment from local potter, Chris Marchant, who sadly passed away in 2014.  This is a wonderful legacy on his behalf, and we are very grateful for the opportunity to incorporate his equipment into the Studio as well.

A Ceramic Studio for all ages

Studio is being used constantly, to the point where classes are booked out several months in advance.  This truly is a real success story!

Age is no barrier – we have students ranging from 9 to 90 years of age and come from a diverse background in ceramic practise.  All aspects of the studio have been embraced – from hand-building to wheel thrown work, glazing and firing, and the spirit of a shared environment to work in.
