I always imagine that when the students and their friends set up camp in Nimbin in 1973 \u2013 like an early version of Occupy \u2013 they didn\u2019t really know what they were doing. I mean this in the sense that they couldn\u2019t see the full extent of what they were unleashing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activism and self-determination have probably been their biggest legacy, and it\u2019s in the Nimbin community itself where the legacy is to be looked for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blue Knob Hall Gallery is very much an aspect of this. Over a decade a small group of very dedicated volunteers have transformed the once-neglected Blue Knob Hall into a vibrant artist\u2019s space, caf\u00e9 and gallery with an excellent and well-patronised market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gallery\u2019s new exhibition is plugging into the Aquarius celebrations in its usual lively way and like all Blue Knob Hall Gallery exhibitions it covers a huge range of styles and media that are continually surprising and always thoughtfully displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blue Knob regular Fiona Shadwell\u2019s textiles are often a stand-out and she has a wide variety of work on display that as always demonstrate a great mastery of craft and a well-inhabited imagination. Blue Knob stalwart, Robin Moore\u2019s painting \u2018Take a deep breath\u2019 \u2013 constructed like a re-visiting of the work of Kyogle\u2019s Karma Phuntsok \u2013 is a deft reminder that technique and admonition are often a hallmark of the work displayed at Blue Knob Hall Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blue Knob Hall Gallery\u2019s space often allows it to show quite large works, especially ceramics, but it\u2019s worth remembering when you\u2019re there to check in the corners and so on, for the smaller pieces, the lithographs and drawings, which are often well-executed and maintain a simplicity that is worth appreciating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
