"Fabric of Life - The Fibre Show"
We embroider, sew, felt, sculpt and weave. We transform fibre into the practical and take what nature gives us and turn that into items that keep our bodies’ warm or cool. We transform fibre into the practical and take it into the creative realms of art.
The afternoon Opening event for “Fabric of Life – The Fibre Show” was well attended and it was great to see the young Fibre Artists come along to see their work in the Gallery.
As always the excitement and conversation between the artists, when seeing other works and techniques, makes a great atmosphere. The next generation of felt-makers and fibre artists were able to meet and talk to some of the felt/fibre artists who came before them who were intrinsic to the start of the felting movement in Australia.
Sachiko Kotaka’s “Felt Wrap”, and one of the next generation of artists, Courtney Heffernan’s “Fungus Head” felted hat, were a talking point. They are stunning examples of the ability for felt to be both delicate and strong.
River Moore’s piece “plastic is the new ocean” shows once again that mixed fibres and crochet can make a powerful statement about the destruction and pollution of the environment. There is a huge variety of work, with Craig Walton’s sculptured Bangalow Palm piece, beautiful and masterful weaving by Robyn Stewart and Wendy Cartwright and much, much more.
This is a feast of fabric and fibre and one of the best Fibre Shows in recent years for its colourful and imaginative works.
The exhibition will run until Saturday 22nd July
